Wolverines junior wrestlers Derek Allen and Gabe Lilly each collected second place finishes in their respective weight classes at the District 7 Class 2A Sectionals this past Saturday at Greensburg Salem High School. After receiving an opening round bye, Allen, who is now 25-8 on the season, used victories by pinfall and decision to earn a place in the 121-pound championship match. Wolverines Beat Washington 53-36, Advance To Quarterfinals

A strong second quarter propelled the Wolverines to a 53-36 victory over Washington Monday night in its WPIAL 3A opening round playoff contest. After a fast paced first frame that saw Ellwood City lead 17-11, the Wolverines held the Prexies scoreless for more than half the second quarter to separate and extend its lead to 29-15 at intermission. Two third quarter 3-pointers by Nate Williams and 10 second half points by Joseph Roth helped the Wolverines secure the victory. Council Approves YMCA Swimming Pool Management Agreement with No Cost Increase to Community

Ellwood City Borough Council approved the 2024 YMCA swimming pool management agreement for $13,800. Borough Manager Kevin Swogger said there will be no cost increase for community members to use the pool this year and the borough will be releasing more details regarding the pool’s 2024 season as well as activities planned including youth parties and featured DJs. Swogger said the borough is also working on securing the America250PA grant, which helps organizations conducting projects that improve the community and engages volunteers. Unified Bocce Playoffs Begin Tuesday

Ellwood City will host the Unified Bocce playoffs on Tuesday with both Ellwood City and Riverside teams represented. Eight teams on four courts will compete in a two round single elimination tournament. Each division gets two courts. According to information made available by the township, the Franklin Township Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 regarding a rezoning request. The hearing will be related to a property owner who owns two parcels of property along Route 288 across from Creek Meadows and where the Mexican Restaurant used to be. Local Fire, EMS Companies Receive Much-Needed State Grants

Grant funding will be coming to several first responder companies in the 9th Legislative District under a program administered by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC) within the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), according to Representatives Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) and Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence).
