United Fund Releases First Allocation of 2019 Campaign Funds

Connie MacDonald, president of the Ellwood City United Fund, announced Friday the United Fund would issue its first allocation of collected funds for 2019. MacDonald stated, “ the service agencies will receive reduced allotments due to the fact, we were unable to meet our annual goal set for the campaign of 2019. Each agency will receive about 30% less then in previous years. The board decided not to use its emergency fund that is reserved for disaster relief. Franklin Township Mosquito Control Event

On July 24, the PA DEP (BU 6464) will be conducting a truck-mounted, Ultra Low Volume (ULV) mosquito control event. This event will begin at around 7:30 pm in Franklin Twp followed by treatments in North Sewickley Twp & New Galilee Boro. Hungarian Home Scholarship Winners

(Ellwood City) Katherine Bowser and Kristina Hogue, seniors at Lincoln and Riverside high schools, respectively, have been selected to receive $500 scholarships from the Ellwood City Hungarian Home. Bowser, a daughter of Kevin and Jennifer Bowser of Ellwood City, plans to attend the Pennsylvania State University this fall and major in environmental engineering. Hogue, a daughter of Jim and Mary Hogue of New Brighton, also plans to attend the Pennsylvania State University and major in journalism/communications. BC3’s Highest Number Of High School Equivalency Graduates

(Butler, PA) Butler County Community College’s free adult literacy program July 24 will graduate 60 students from Butler and Mercer counties with high school equivalency diplomas, the most since at least the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the director of the 33-year-old program said. Forty students attending BC3 adult literacy classes in Butler County and 20 in Mercer County passed General Education Development tests that measure proficiency in language arts, which includes reading and writing; and in mathematics, science and social studies between July 1, 2018, and June 30, Barb Gade said. BCS Debutes Mobile Lab For Online Manufacturing

(New Castle, PA) Butler County Community College’s manufacturing pre-apprenticeship certificate program, registered with the state Department of Labor and Industry and free to eligible students, will debut at BC3 @ Lawrence Crossing in August as mostly online and bolstered by eight hands-on lab sessions using equipment to be brought to BC3’s additional location in New Castle. Master Gardeners Host 4th Annual Garden Tour

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Lawrence County are hosting their Fourth Annual Garden Tour on Sunday, July 21st from Noon to 5:00 p.m. The tour highlights five area gardens, which can be toured at your own pace. Master Gardeners will be available at each location to answer questions. The tour will consist of five gardens within Lawrence County. June 30 Dubbed Eric Rayner Day

On June 28, 2019, Mayor Anthony J. Court presented a proclamation to Eric Rayner, declaring that June 30, 2019, as Eric Rayner Day in Ellwood City. Eric was the leader in saving the fireworks display for the Ellwood City Festival, raising $11,000 for the fireworks show. Ellwood City is proud of a great job done by Eric and grateful for all who donated to keep this tradition alive. I believe everyone, in and around the Ellwood City area, enjoyed the fireworks immensely.
