]New Castle, PA] – For the second straight year, ELLWOOD celebrated Manufacturing Week with a tour of Lawrence County area high schools, talking with area students about the many manufacturing career opportunities available in the community. PennDOT Announces ‘Innovations Challenge’ for High School Students

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that high school students from around the state are invited to participate in the seventh annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic-thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades 9-12, regardless of their school’s learning model. FEMA and FCC Plan Nationwide Emergency Alert Test for October 4th

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this afternoon. The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. This is a standard test that occurs at least once every three years. No action is needed. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. Hard to Read License Plate Event Scheduled To Help With Free Replacements

HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) will be hosting a Hard to Read License Plate event to help constituents with free replacement of license plates that have become difficult to read. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Prospect Boro/Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department. “Our motorists can get pulled over and fined if their license plate is crumbling or deteriorated,” said Bernstine. “Police need to be able to identify vehicles that they might be seeking. The Ellwood City Oktoberfest Tickets are now on sale. Oktoberfest, a partnership of community organizations, is in its 13th year and will take place on Saturday, October 7th in Ewing Park. Local Baseball History Highlighted At Historical Society Dinner

Dick Freidhoff passed away in 1985. The local steelworker never coached high school baseball, yet his influence on the game helped Riverside High School win the State Championship in 2023. Illustrious Riverside head baseball coach, Dan Oliastro credited Freidhoff with instilling in him a love for the game and a winning ethic when he played for him as a member of the Moose Club-sponsored little league team in the 1950s. “We practiced every day.
