This weekend, the streets of Ellwood City were packed full of festive families welcoming the Christmas season! The Chamber of Commerce did a great job organizing all of the events, which included Light Up Night, Christmas in the Park, and a Christmas parade. REMINDER: Time is Almost Up to Vote Connoquenessing for River of the Year

Voting for Pennsylvania’s River of the Year ends TODAY, December 22, 2017. The winning river gets a $10,000 grant. The Connoquenessing was 1 of 5 nominations picked out of hundreds of submissions. As we all know, over time this local waterway had been neglected and abused leading to its rating as the 2nd most polluted waterway in America in 2000. Since then through Allegheny Aquatic Alliance and other organizations’ efforts, significant positive changes have been made to this creek and have resulted in the restoration of it. Decorated and ready for this weekend’s Ellwood City Municipal Woman’s House Tour is the DeSanzo house, located at 417 Hazel Ave. The home features several Christmas trees, mangers, and a Christmas village set up above the cabinets – to name just a few iconic decorations! Homeowner, Joseph DeSanzo said it takes on average 10 hours to decorate the home with the majority of time taken up by the Christmas village set up. A gallery of the decorations is posted below. This week’s Old Photo Friday is a photo of three men (names not listed) burying a time capsule. The year the photo was taken is stated 1992. There is not much info included with the photo, so we don’t know who the men are, where the capsule is buried (it looks like it’s near the municipal building), or what’s in it, but we would love to know – so comment below or on our Facebook post with any information you might have! VIDEO: Elementary Student Narrates Weekend Events in School Newscast

“Attention all students – we have one really cool thing to report this week that has something to do with this weekend,” Giovanna, an Ellwood City elementary school student, stated during the Perry-Hartman school news production centered around the Let There Be Lights weekend. She then furthers on, professionally narrating the events to take place this weekend while clips of past year’s events play. Sponsored Trees in Ewing Park

Our journalist took a stroll in Ewing Park yesterday and noticed several of the sponsored Christmas trees have been decorated in preparation of this weekend. About the Christmas events: “Let There Be Lights Weekend” begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 1. The festival will include vendors, entertainment, horse and trolley rides, reindeer, fireworks and the lighting of the Christmas tree. SPOILER ALERT: House Tour Event Features Local Church

The Ellwood City Municipal Woman’s House Tour features something a little different this year – a church! Trinity Lutheran Church will be part of the tour, and it is truly a magical sight to say the least. From the aw-inspiring stained glass windows to the realistic decorative organ pipes, the Christmas decor adds an appropriate accenting holiday atmosphere. Criminal Complaints: Ellwood City Man Facing Felony Theft Charges

Ellwood City Man Facing Felony Theft Charges James Allen Sawyers, 26, of Ellwood City, is facing one felony count of theft by unlawful taking and one felony count of receiving stolen property after stealing a jewelry box full of miscellaneous jewelry from a local household. According to the complaint, the resident of the household was unwell for several months and had to have caregivers in and out of the residence often. The homeowner had noticed the jewelry box missing after one of the caregivers had brought their son, who would sometimes cut the grass of the property until his services…


New Year’s Eve Bingo

Holy Redeemer is hosting their New Year’s Eve Bingo on December 31, 2017 at the Catholic Center located at 311 Lawrence Avenue. Doors open at 5p.m. and the cost is $25.00 in advance of $30.00 the day of at the door. $1000.00 coverall with 70+ players – cookie jars and two winner-take-all games!
