After six seasons in the NHL, Wampum native Stephen Johns is hanging up his skates. The 29-year-old Stars defenseman announced his retirement on social media Sunday. Johns now plans to travel the country to help others struggling with their mental health. The 26-year-old Dallas Star and Wampum native Stephen Johns takes his viewers on a tour of his hometown in this published video made available on NHL.com presented by Kia. The 6’4″ 221-pound defenseman finished with 15 points and a plus-10 rating in 75 games last season for the Dallas Stars. Johns played four seasons at Notre Dame, scoring 15 goals and 57 points in 164 games, and led the team to the 2013 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament title. Johns and the Stars play the Pittsburgh Penguins just once this regular season –– Wednesday, November 21st at PPG Paints Arena. 


Delmar Presents Stephen Johns with Jersey

Life-long Delmar Golf Course member and Wampum native Stephen Johns was presented with a NHL Dallas Stars jersey on behalf of the members and Delmar Golf Course Board of Directors in recognition of his accomplishments. Stephen is a current member of the NHL Dallas Stars and graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Stephen’s Dallas jersey will be on display at the golf course along with a plaque chronicling his NHL accomplishments. Stephen will be hosting a golf outing July 23rd at Delmar golf course to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness.

Ellwood City now boasts a National Hockey League Player. Stephen Johns made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars on March 11 and has since played four more games. On March 17, he scored his first goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Johns is a native of Wampum and a Class of 2010 Lincoln High School graduate. Curtis Stephenson, 83

Curtis Stephenson, 83, of Turkey Hill Rd., Shenango Twp., passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 following an illness. Born October 5, 1934 in Moravia, PA,  he was the son of the late Jesse Merit and Florence Blanche Allen Stephenson. Curt worked at the P&LE Railroad and at CSX until his retirement on his 63rd birthday. A longtime member of the NRA and of the Wampum Rod and Gun Club, he enjoyed all shooting sports. 2023 Delmar Golf Course Club Championship Results

The 63rd Annual Delmar Golf Course Club Championship was held August 5th and August 6th, 2023. This year the event featured 63 members and Sam Barry Jr. collected his 11th club championship. Barry, Jr. finished with a two day total of 4 under par, 140 to win by 3 strokes over Broc Boariu and Lino Simeoni. Skating Into The Top 3, Hess Ice Rink Looks To Cash In

A local ice rink, Hess Ice Rink in New Castle, has been selected as one of the three finalists for a “Renovate the Rink” contest co-hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Voting opened Friday, February 1st and runs through Friday, February 22nd. This contest was introduced in October of 2018 as a new contest. This contest is hosted by Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Commercial Construction (PittComm). The winner will receive up to $100,000 in goods and services to renovate their rink.
