Ellwood City Mayor Completes Security and Privacy: General Role Training

Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court recently completed the Security and Privacy: General Role training and has reported receiving a score of 100%.

Court said the training was approximately four hours and included his test.

“It is an important tool for security and privacy to allow access to areas that contain sensitive law enforcement material” Court said. “I recommend all mayors to join Criminal Justic Information Service (CJIS) and to go through this training to gain a better understanding of what officers go through to protect private rights, criminal history information and other sensitive documents that aren’t allowed to be reviewed by the general public.”

A general role CJIS Security and Privacy online training course is mandatory for anyone with unescorted access to Criminal Justice Information (CJI), including law enforcement personnel, vendors and contractors handling CJI, personnel in non-criminal justice agencies who need access to CJI, and any individual with unescorted access to physically secure locations processing or storing CJI.

The course covers topics like password management and authentication: best practices for secure login credentials; physical security: protecting workstations and storage devices; phishing prevention: recognizing and avoiding deceptive attacks; incident response: procedures for reporting and responding to security incidents; and user responsibilities: acknowledging and upholding the CJIS Security Policy.

The FBI CJIS Security Policy mandates security standards for organizations that handle Criminal Justice Information (CJI), requiring strict controls over access, authentication, encryption, physical security, and training to protect sensitive data. Key requirements include advanced authentication (like multi-factor authentication), security awareness training for personnel, robust incident response plans, and adherence to specific control priorities outlined in the policy.

The training is important for compliance: fulfilling the mandatory requirements of the FBI’s CJIS Security Policy; security: protecting sensitive Criminal Justice Information from threats and misuse; and integrity: maintaining the integrity of law enforcement operations and criminal justice systems.
