Several local athletes performed at the 2025 WPIAL Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at the William C. Lennox Track at Slippery Rock University, with some qualifying for the PIAA Championships
Ellwood City senior Delaney Sturgeon qualified for two events while Kaden Doccio and the boys relay team will each advance to the PIAA.
Sturgeon finished 3rd in the 100 hurdles (15.73) and 2nd in the high jump (5-6) on Wednesday. Sturgeon previously earned four top-10 finishes in the MAC Championships last month.
Kaden Doccio finished 6th in the 110m boys hurdles (16.52)
The Ellwood City boys relay team (Bradley Custer, Lucas Bleakney, N. Young, Drew Steffler) qualified for the PIAA with a 5th place finish in the 3200m Relay (8:11.32). Quaker Valley (Jackson Pethel, River Capek, Jonah Montagnese, Clark Lalomia) finish first, setting a WPIAL Record time at 7:51.89.

For Riverside, and joining Doccio in qualifying for the 110m Hurdles is Panther sprinter Gavin Lutz who finished 7th (16.62) in his qualifying effort.
Lutz also placed 5th in the 300 hurdles (41.74) to qualify for the PIAA Championships.
Davin Gartley, of Quaker Valley, finished 1st in the 110m Hurdles (14.36) and in the 300m Hurdles (38.15).
In the field, Riverside’s Carson Emrick offered a WPIAL Runner-up performance in boys discuss and will compete in the PIAA Championships. Emrick posted a personal record on his final toss of 163’9″ to earn the second place finish. Jonah Pfender, of Fort Cherry, set a WPIAL record with a toss of 176’7″
The PIAA state meet will run on May 23rd and 24th at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.
