A week after a low scoring slugfest between section rivals, Ellwood City and Riverside each found some offensive firepower in collecting big section wins Friday night.
The ground attack was on display as Elijah Palmer McCane rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns as Ellwood City wiped out Union 33-6 and, not to be outdone, Robbie Janis rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns as Riverside shutout Beaver Falls 31-0.
For the Wolverines, the victory clinched at least a share of section title – a first since 1997 – and continues their bid for an undefeated regular season.
Palmer-McCane’s rushing effort was part of an impressive offensive showing by the Wolverines. Ellwood City outgained the Scotties 439-105 in total offensive. Quarterback Chris Smiley finished 16-31 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Panthers, rebounding from its narrow home defeat at the hands of Ellwood City helps the team eye a potential playoff berth. The victory improved Riverside’s section record to 4-2 and in a tie for third place with Mohawk entering the final week of the regular season.
On Friday, the Panthers stacked up 327 of rushing in their victory. Zack Hare joined Janis in finding the endzone and chipped in 48 yards rushing. Quarterback Aiden Gaydosz finished 7-12 passing for 77 yards including a 23-yard touchdown strike to Ayden Garcia.
Ellwood City (8-0 Overall) next hosts Beaver Falls Friday night to wrap up its regular season and host senior night. With a victory, Ellwood City will earn its undefeated regular season and clinch an outright section championship. Riverside will next travel to Mohawk for a pivotal section game versus the Warriors.
