Trio Of Local Playoff Games Set For Tuesday

Three local teams will compete on Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs

Top seeded Panthers boys baseball team will look to defend its WPIAL title as it opens its 2024 playoff journey on Tuesday.

Riverside will take on #16 Keystone Oaks at 4:30 p.m. at North Allegheny High School.

The Panthers took charge last week with two victories over section foe Mohawk to earn an outright section championship. Riverside finished 11-1 in Section 1-3A and 13-1 Overall with their lone defeat at the hands of Neshannock. The Lancers enter the playoffs as a #11 seed while the Warriors enter as a #2 seed.

Riverside enters the playoffs with an impressive offensive averaging 10.3 runs per game and an equally impressive defense that allowed only 20 runs in 14 games. Juniors Christian Lucarelli (3-0, 0.93 ERA) and Zach Hare (8-0, 0.88 ERA) lead the impressive pitching staff.

With a victory on Tuesday, Riverside will advance to play the winner of Shady Side Academy and South Park at a location to be determined on Tuesday, May 20th.

A pair of local softball teams each earned respective playoff berths this year.

Ellwood City (14-4 Overall, 7-3 Section 2-3A) earned a 10-seed in the WPIAL Class 3A bracket and will face #7 seed Burrell on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Burrell matched Ellwood City with a 7-3 section record in Section 1-3A while finishing 10-8 overall.

The Wolverines and Burrell will play Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Mars Area High School.

Section champion Mohawk from Section 2-3A opens as a #4 seed while Central Valley earned a #6 seed.  Avonworth (12-3 Overall), winners of 10 consecutive games, enters the Class 3A softball playoffs as the top seed.

With a victory on Tuesday, the Lady Wolverines will face the winner of #2 Ligioner Valley and #15 Keystone Oaks. Favorite Ligioner Valley enter the playoffs as co-section champion of Section 3-3A with a 8-2 mark and a 13-5 overall record.

In the WPIAL Class 2A Softball Playoffs, the Riverside Panthers earned a #9 seed with their 6-6 mark in Section 1-2A and will face #8 seeded Apollo-Ridge (8-5 Overall, 7-3 Section 1-2A). The Panthers finished 6-9 overall.

The Panthers and Apollo-Ridge squared off at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Fox Chapel High School.

With a victory Tuesday the Lady Panthers will face overall top seed Neshannock (19-0 Overall) on Thursday. The unbeaten Lancers, seeking their third consecutive WPIAL championship, received a first round bye and enter the WPIAL Playoffs with an astounding 197-8 run differential.
