The Ellwood City Wolverines Co-Ed Cross Country Team and Co-Ed Golf teams each collected victories last week to continue their respective winning streaks. Golf has now won four straight matches after losing four of their previous five matches.
The Wolverines last week defeated the Mohawk Warriors in by far the biggest upset on the year by Ellwood City with a score of 214-218. The victory came eight days after the Wolverines were victorious against the Union Scotties 221-232 to break the losing ways.
The winning ways continued this week as the Wolverines defeated the Riv-Ell Cup rival Riverside Panthers at Connoquenessing Country Club, 223-234. Now the Wolverines pick up their fourth straight victory in that span, coming back to defeat the Shenango Wildcats by 4 strokes 225-229.
Leading the charge all season long as has been Freshmen phenom Jordan Keller for the Wolverines, averaging a match stroke mark of just over 43. In the meantime, youth continues to play a big factor in the Wolverines success as Juniors and Sophomores are helping the team prove worthy of possible playoffs.
The Wolverines are now officially 7-4 (6-4) on the season with just two section matches left – Tuesday at Neshannock and Thursday back home for the final match against Laurel. If the Wolverines find a way to pull the upset in both matches, they will return back to playoffs once again. The Wolverines also have Section qualifiers / WPIALS for boys on Monday while having WPIAL qualifiers on Friday for Girls.
Ellwood City Cross Country picked up where they left off last year as the regular season section winning streak continues as the Wolverines defeated the Lancers and Lions on Tuesday this week.
Talk about winning streaks – now to 22 straight victories in section play, dating back now two years plus as the Wolverines are looking for not only their third section title in a row, but also doing by defeating all of their section opponents.
The Wolverines XC team defeated the Neshannock Lancers 24-33 to pick up the victory while posting a team average of 19:51.71 and an overall time of 1:39:18.56. Leading the charge for the Wolverines was Bradley Custer finishing 2nd overall with a time of 19:15.87 along with Ian Stoneking finishing 3rd overall with a time of 19:17.59. Overall 1st place went to the Lancers’ Brendan Burns who finished with a time of 17:58.57.
Wolverines XC team picked up their second win easily over the New Brighton Lions, winning 15-45. Bradley Custer’s results had him place 1st against the Lions, while Ian Stoneking finished 2nd. Wolverines picked up 3rd through 5th as well to the likes of Drew Steffler, Nick Wise, and Kaden Schlichtkrull. Will White finished 6th overall to pace the Lions in the 30 point loss.
Ellwood City will travel to Freedom to take on the Bulldogs and Laurel Spartans in a tri-meet slated for 3:30 PM on Tuesday.
OF NOTE: The Lady Wolverines Volleyball Team dropped consecutive matches last week, loses to Neshannock and Laurel, and fell to 4-2 (2-2) on the season, slipping to the fourth spot in the section while the Wildcats and Lancers will be setting up a primetime matchup against each other with their undefeated records. The Wolverines this week will look to bounce back against Laurel at home Tuesday while traveling to Beaver Falls on Thursday.
Ellwood City next hosts a home match against Laurel on Tuesday.
