Ellwood City used a decisive first quarter to race out to an early lead in its eventual 60-45 victory over rival Riverside Friday evening at Riverside High School.
The Wolverines used 10 first quarter points by sophomore Joseph Roth to race out to a 19-4 advantage. The 15 point cushion held through halftime as the teams played even through halftime with Ellwood City ahead 31-16 at the break.
Bo Fornataro collect six of his 11 points in the second quarter to help Riverside keep pace in the quarter.
A third quarter barrage of three pointers resulted in a combined 36 points between the rivals, but Riverside could gain no ground.
Madden Boehm connected on three 3-pointers in the frame but Ellwood City used three pointers by three different Wolverines to keep its advantage. Seniors Alexander Roth and Steve Antuono each connected with two 3-pointers in the quarter while Joseph Roth sank one from deep as part of the Wolverines 19-point third quarter effort.
Antuono finished with a game-high 22 points (four 3-pointers, 6-10 FTs, 5 steals) for Ellwood City while Alexander Roth fnished with 13 points (three 3-pointers, 2-2 FTs, 8 rebounds).
Joseph Roth earned a double-double in the victory, finishing with 19 points (4-6 FTs) and 17 rebounds.
Boehm finished with five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 16 points in defeat for the Panthers (5-12 overall, 0-6 Section 1-3A).
The Wolverines (15-2 overall, 6-0 Section 1-3A) finished with an advantage at the charity stripe, finishing 13-22 as a team while the host Panthers only attempted four free throws in the contest.
Ellwood City next plays Sto-Rox in a non-section contest on Sunday at the Montour Classic before returning home for a pivotal section match-up against Neshannock Lancers (13-3 overall) on Tuesday, February 1.
