In a local sports round-up, the Ellwood City Junior High Football team collected Tri-County championship while the Ellwood City Girls Volleyball team remained unbeaten. Congratulations are in order for both Riverside Panther boys and girls soccer teams as they each qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs.
The Riverside Boys (4-5-1 overall) qualified for a 16-team Class-A playoff field and will face #2 Winchester Thurston (11-1-0 overall, Class 1A Section 2) in first round action on Tuesday, October 27th. The boys will play at Chatham College at 7:30 p.m. [VIEW BRACKET]
Last year, Greensburg Central Catholic captured the WPIAL title by beating section rival Winchester Thurston in their third meeting that season. Winchester returned the favor in PIAA playoffs though. In the past two years, including this year’s two section matches, the teams have each won three games against each other.
The Riverside Girls soccer team (4-6-0 overall) also earned a playoff berth and will face top seed #1 Greensburg Central Catholic (10-0-0 overall, Class 1A Section 1) in first round action on Saturday, October 24th. The girls will play at Norwin High School at 3:00 p.m. [VIEW BRACKET]

The Ellwood City Girls Volleyball continued their unbeaten regular season campaign with a convincing victories over Mohawk on Wednesday and Beaver Falls on Thursday, moving their record to 14-0 on the regular season. The girls used straight set victories (25-16, 25-9, 25-10) to secure the victory on Wednesday and straight set victories (25-1, 25-6, 25-10) to defeat the Tigers on Thursday evening.
The Lady Wolverines have wrapped up their undefeated regular season, collecting their Class 2A section championship, and now await the WPIAL playoff pairings. Last year, Ellwood City was bounced in the second round by North Catholic while Freeport collected the 2019 WPIAL Class 2A champion title.
