BC3 to Host OSHA Construction Standards, Trainer Courses

Butler, PA – Butler County Community College has entered into a host-site agreement with West Virginia University Safety and Health Extension to host Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute Education Center courses on BC3’s main campus and at BC3 @ LindenPointe.

An OSHA 510 Construction Standards course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 5-8 on BC3’s main campus, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10-13 at BC3 @ LindenPointe in Hermitage, according to Tom Baughman, BC3’s energy and safety specialist.

An OSHA 500 Construction Trainer course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 2-5 on BC3’s main campus, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4-7 at BC3 @ LindenPointe, Baughman said. The OSHA 500 course is limited to students who have successfully completed the OSHA 510 class and have a minimum of five years of related construction safety experience.

Courses on BC3’s main campus will be held in Room 206 of the Public Safety Building. Both courses are open to the public and cost $750 each.

Topics in the OSHA 510 Construction Standards course, according to the OSHA Training Institute Education Center, include the “effects of workplace injuries and illnesses; the mission and importance of OSHA in the workplace; the processes and rules for OSHA inspections, citations, penalties and policies; OSHA recordkeeping requirements for injuries and illnesses and OSHA forms 300, 300A and 301; programs and requirements that protect construction workers from injuries and illnesses; and federal OSHA standards that protect workers from common physical safety hazards.”

The OSHA 500 Construction Trainer course is designed for those who are interested in teaching OSHA’s 10-hour and 30-hour construction safety and health outreach classes to employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on topics that are required in the 10-hour and 30-hour.

The WVU Safety and Health Extension serves as the lead organization for the National Resource Center, an OSHA Training Institute Education Center in Region III that includes Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

In addition to the standards and trainer courses, the OSHA Training Institute Education Center delivers industry and topic-specific safety and health courses, including those addressing fall protection and oil and gas.

Frequent attendees include safety professionals, human resource managers, supervisors and those with general safety and health responsibilities from the construction, healthcare, maritime, manufacturing, oil and gas and service industries.

The WVU Safety and Health Extension is developing a network of host sites throughout OSHA Region III. The goal of the host-site agreement is to increase awareness and knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards and safety controls, as well as to reduce injuries, illnesses and deaths that occur each year throughout the region.

The agreement will result in additional teaching, research and service opportunities among all of the colleges and universities.
