Ellwood City Wrestling Improves To 4-1 On Season

The Ellwood City wrestling team collected two victories in a tri-meet on Wednesday at Lincoln High School to improve their record to 4-1 on the regular season.

The Wolverines knocked off New Castle 48-15 and defeated Summit Academy 41-30 in the wrestling action.

“The team has really came together. They are starting to gel well and we have a fun environment,” said coach John Fleming. “The kids are holding themselves accountable and showing up to extra practices at the club level and holding one another accountable to be on time to practice and work hard – 2 things we put extra emphasis on this year.”

Freshman Lewis Leslie (152 pounds) pinned Michael Dawson of Summit Academy to collect a match victory.

“Leslie hit a beautiful one arm bundle that was just taught this past week,” says Fleming.

Seniors Nathan Chandler (172 pounds) and Gavin McClure (139 pounds) each collected two victories in their respective matches on Wednesday.

Chandler collected his team-best eight match victory of the season with a pinfall victory in the 172-pound match against Summit Academy.

The team collected a combined nine pinfall victories in the two match-ups.

“We ran the basics that we were emphasizing beautifully yesterday,” added Flemming. “The kids are getting hungry to learn more and it’s showing by properly hitting technique we just recently taught in the room.”

“We are very happy with their performance last night overall as a coaching staff.”

The Wolverine wrestling team next will eye the Northwestern Wildcat Duals on Saturday at Northwestern HS before returning two regular season matches before District 7 AA tournaments in February.
