Wolverines Wrestling Finishes 11th Overall At Buckeye Panther Classic

The Ellwood City wrestling team placed 11th overall recently at the Buckeye Local Panther Classic.

The team was among 22 teams participating in the tournament at Buckeye Local High School in Ohio on Saturday, January 27th.

Gavin McClure and Gabe Lilly each advanced to the championship finals in their respective weight classes to pace the Wolverines team efforts.

McClure (132 pounds) was defeated by Jordan Noble (Bridgeport, OH) by pin and Lilly (144 pounds) fell to Max Fortier (Fairmont, WV) by decision in the championships matches.

Derek Allen picked up a victory in the 5th place consolation match in the 120 pound weight class.  Maurice Smith (132 pounds) and Nathan Chandler (215 pounds) each picked up victories by pinfall in Round Robin Round 5.

Fairmont, WV collected the overall team championship with 277.0 points. The Wolverines posted 90.0 points as a team for their 11th place finish.

The Ellwood City (5-6 Overall, 2-4 WPIAL AA, Section-5) wrestling team next will host Beaver Area for its Senior Night match on Wednesday, February 7th at 7:00 p.m. that wraps up its regular season. The Wolverines will then turn their focus to a series of tournaments, including WPIAL Districts and Regionals.
