Wolverine freshman wrestler Gavin McClure earned a 1st place finish in his 133-pound weight class at the 2023 WPIAL AA Eastern Sectionals held at Greensburg Salem High School this past Saturday.
With the performance McClure qualifies for the WPIAL Class-2A Wrestling Individual Championships to be held on February 24-25 at Chartiers Valley High School. [VIEW BRACKETS]
On Saturday, McClure pinned pinned Tuscan Blystone (Indiana), at 0:57 to wrap up his third match of the sectional and the 1st place finish. McClure went 3-0 on the afternoon.
McClure pinned Zander Nuttall (Derry Area), at 0:28, in the quarterfinals and pinned Aiden Mulheren (Ligonier Valley), at 1:08, in the semifinals
“He came out and really did what we have been emphasizing in the practice room,” said coach John Fleming. “He took a couple years off from wrestling and came back this year and it took him a good bit of the season to knock the rust off. He really went out there this weekend and earned every position and every win.
Two Ellwood City sophomore wrestlers, Logan Shriver (107 pounds) and Derek Allen (114 pounds), were both were defeated in their third place matches. Each wrestler finished with two victories and two losses in their individual matches on Saturday.
Wolverine wrestlers Chris Quintanilla (145 pounds) and Nathan Chandler (189 pounds) each were defeated in fifth place matches.
The PIAA Southwest Class-2A Regional Championships are scheduled to be held March 3-4 at Altoona HS.
