Borough of Ellwood City Christmas Tree Disposal Available

Taking down the Christmas tree is only one task after the holiday season. For families with real trees, figuring out what to do with them may be a whole other task.

According to information made available by the Borough of Ellwood City, residents may drop off live Christmas trees at Stiefel Park, just inside the park entrance from Brighton Road, now through January 31, 2026.

Residents who drop off trees are reminded that they must remove all decorations and stands from the trees prior to the drop-off. Please only drop off live trees, NO artificial trees will be accepted!

Treecycling is a process that grinds old, unwanted live trees into other useful materials — mainly mulch. Since live trees are biodegradable, they can be safely composted, mulched or disposed of with other yard waste.

Want to do it yourself? The evergreen boughs from your Christmas tree are an ideal base layer for compost piles. Branches allow airflow at the bottom of the pile providing the oxygen and heat necessary for the upper layers of the pile to decompose. Give branches a trim as needed to fit in your pile or bin before stacking them a few inches high. Once this layer is in place, add kitchen scraps and compostable items as usual.

Trees can also be donated to area animal humane societies, zoos, wildlife preserves or wetland restoration efforts after the holidays are over.  Living Treasures Animal Park near New Castle uses donated real Christmas trees for animal enrichment, providing toys and treats for animals like tigers and goats, and sometimes mulching them. The trees must be from a cat free home, no tinsel, no flocking, no spray, etc.
