Dick Allen will finally be inducted in to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

The wait will come to end on Sunday, July 27th when Allen is posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame with a well-deserved plaque in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Wampum Borough will play host to celebrations this coming weekend ahead of Richard “Dick” Allen’s induction.

Organizers are calling it the Dick Allen Festival with a testimonial dinner kicking things off Thursday at Le Resto Restaurant in New Castle where friends, former teammates and residents can share memories of Allen.

On Friday, a celebration will take place at Main Street Chapel & Events at 911 Clyde Street in Wampum, scheduled as an informal gathering to share memories of Allen. A social hour starts at 5:00 p.m. with a program running from 6-9pm including a state proclamation along with food and beverages for sale.

On Saturday, a ceremonial basketball tournament will take place at the Wampum gymnasium.  Allen went to Wampum High, the smallest high school in the state, with an enrollment of 46 boys. He played on two championship basketball teams as Wampum ran up 82 straight wins, helped in no little part by Coach L. Butler Hennon and his son, the later All-America Don Hennon.

Sunday will bring a watch party beginning at noon at the Main Street Chapel to watch the ceremonies get underway at Cooperstown.

Wampum Borough is also sending a bus for an overnight trip to Cooperstown to see the ceremony. A beautiful, painted mural is now showcased in Wampum honoring Allen.

Allen and Pittsburgh Pirates legend Dave Parker will take their rightful place in Cooperstown as part of the Class of 2025, which also features Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner. That trio was elected via the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot.

According to MLB.com, and despite the HOF-worthy statistics, Allen never gained much traction in his initial 15 years on the BBWAA ballot during the 1980s and 1990s stemming from the narrative that he was too brash on the field and in the clubhouse — but much of that was in response to the racism he was dealing with throughout his career that spanned from 1963-77.

Over a 15-year career, Allen slashed .292/.378/.534 with 351 home runs, 1,119 RBIs, a .912 OPS and a 156 OPS+. He spent the majority of that time with the Phillies, though he also played for the White Sox, Cardinals, Dodgers and A’s. Allen passed away in December 2020.

With a Hall of Fame induction complete, family, friends, and fans can turn their focus to a documentary named “My Father, Dick Allen” scheduled to release in 2026.

  1. I was a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, but Richie Allen was a feared slugger. I assumed he was already in the Hall of Fame.
