The Riverside Lions Club continues its community support through various programs and donations. The club offers a series of updates below spotlighting their recent efforts:
The club started off the new segment by participating in a District Soup Assembly. Under the supervision of PDG’s Jeff and Maria Laudermilk (Riverside/Hopewell Lions) members from different clubs in the District met at the Butler Blind Association to assemble the equivalent of 9000 dry soup meals.
The saying “many hands make light work” was never more true than in this instance.
After a two hour set-up, approximately 55 people showed up Saturday and completed the project in less than 3 hours. These meals were distributed equally among the clubs that participated.
“We brought ours home and donated it to the Holy Redeemer Food Bank,” says Chip Campbell. “This was the second time we, as a District, assembled dry soup to be donated. The first time we assembled 6000 meals and donated them to emergencies in our southern states.”
The club also had the opportunity to distribute toys to seven different locations. They were supplied to the club through the Project Homefront initiative.
“We were lucky to be able to distribute to Riverside Schools, Perry school, Beaver Falls School, Holy Redeemer Social Services, Central Valley School, Portersville Food Bank and EC Library,” says Campbell. “Later in the year we were once again lucky enough to be picked to receive School Supplies thru the same organization. The same people received the supplies as did the Toys, with the addition of North Side school which was added to the list.”
Through friends at Label Shopper, the Lions were able to purchase 14 coats that we donated to the Holy Redeemer Social Services and also bought winter clothes for both Riverside and Perry Schools.
“We’d like to thank the employees at Label Shopper for this assistance in obtaining these articles. The store also presented us the opportunity to purchase and distribute 9 cases of Hand sanitizer to four different locations,” says Campbell.
For the fourth year the club matched a “spare change challenge” matching a members change collected through the year and donated it to the Beaver County Humane Society. Pictured are King Lion Chip and a Beaver County Humane Society employee Ariana.
Last but not least, the Riverside Lions Club spearheads the Beaver County Math 24 awards event.
Each year for the last nine, the Lions clubs of Beaver County have been active supporters in the acknowledgement of the effort put forth by the students who participate in this math challenge.
Math 24 is a card game designed to challenge the participants to come to a total of 24 using adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Each card is designated a point total and the student who is first to the correct score gets the card, the highest total at the end of the round advances. It starts on the individual school level where it’s pared down to four players from each class, grades four through eight who advance to the county championship.
This year the event was held at Penn State Beaver campus.
This year’s awards consisted of a baseball cap, a knit cap, pencils, a flashlight, and a bag to carry it all in. all the awards are emblazed with the “Beaver County Math 24 Finalist” logo.
Pizza Joes in Ellwood donated a Gift Basket which was raffled off to one of the participants.
