Franklin Township Warns Residents Of Potential Weekend Flooding

Franklin Township and its Supervisors have posted information to inform area residents about the possibility of flooding in the Ellwood City area now through this weekend due to expected moderate to heavy rainfall.

“While we are monitoring the situation closely, we want to ensure that everyone is prepared for potential flooding and can take appropriate steps to protect their property and safety,” says the township officials. “Your safety is our priority, and we encourage all residents to take the necessary precautions.”

According to The Weather Channel, the Ellwood City area is set to see nearly one inch of rainfall Thursday evening in to overnight.  Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Friday and Saturday with advisories of nearly a half inch of rainfall expected Saturday night.

Key Information:

  • Potential Flooding: Forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall now through this weekend could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.
  • Dates to Watch: Thursday, April 3rd through Sunday, April 6th.

Steps to Prepare for Flooding:

  • Clear Drains and Gutters: Ensure all gutters, storm drains, and downspouts around your home are clear of debris to help water flow freely and reduce the chance of pooling around your property.
  • Move Valuables to Higher Ground: If you live in a flood-prone area, consider relocating valuable or irreplaceable items (e.g., electronics, documents) to higher levels in your home.
  • Sandbags and Flood Barriers: If you’re in a flood-prone area, you may want to acquire sandbags or temporary flood barriers.
  • Check Flood Insurance: Ensure that your flood insurance (if applicable) is up-to-date. This is especially important if you are in a high-risk flood zone along the Connoquenessing Creek.
  • Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes essential supplies such as water, food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, medications, and important documents in a waterproof container.
  • Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date with weather alerts and follow any guidance from local authorities. In case of an emergency, please follow evacuation orders promptly.

According to the township, the local authorities are monitoring the situation and will provide updates if any immediate actions are needed.

“We will continue to send out any important notifications related to the flooding situation,” adds the township officials. “Your safety is our priority, and we encourage all residents to take the necessary precautions. Should you need assistance or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your attention, and please stay safe.”

Last April, portions of North Sewickley Township were under water as heavy rain led to high water levels and flooding of the Connoquenessing Creek. The creek reached recorded gage heights as high as 15.23 ft in April 2024. Early 2022, the river flooded areas of Country Club Road and Mercer Road after heavy rains in February 2022.
