SPORTS ROUND-UP: Zach Hare Leads RHS Baseball, Tennis Defeats LHS

Zack Hare was dominant on the bump Thursday afternoon and at the plate Thursday in Riverside’s 4-1 victory over West Allegheny running the Panthers early season unbeaten record to 4-0.

Hare rang up 11 strikeouts and surrendered only three hits, one walk, and one run over six and two-thirds innings. The righty also went 4-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Hare also opened up the offensive scoring for Riverside with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Riverside added one run in the third after scored on a wild pitch.

Hunter Garvin and Hare were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as the duo combined for six of the Panthers seven hits and each drove in one run for Riverside. Sean Hayes earned three walks at the dish for Riverside.

Brandon Boyce took the loss for West Allegheny Varsity Indians. The right-handed pitcher went four innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out eight and
walking six. Hunter Garvin collected the save for the Panthers striking out his lone batter after West Allegheny threatened in the seventh inning.

McNabb went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Logan Lambert, McNabb, and Danny Sorensen each collected one hit for West Allegheny.

The unbeaten Panthers will travel across the mighty Connoquenessing to Ellwood City for a section-opening tilt against its rival on Monday at 4:30 p.m. The Panthers have outscored their first four opponents a combined 36-3.

UPDATE: Monday’s EC vs Riverside game has been bumped back to Wednesday 4:30 PM (Sanders Field). Tuesday will be the Section Opener where EC travels to Riverside 4:30 PM.

RIVERSIDE TENNIS DEFEATS ELLWOOD CITY

The Riverside Panthers boys tennis team dispatched of Ellwood City 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Ewing Park.

Jaden Falk (6-0, 6-0) and Jackson Emerick (7-6, 7-5) each collected singles victories for Riverside. The duos of Robert Janis & Vaughtn Belczyk (6-2, 6-0) and Aiden Simeoni & Ryan Fry (6-2, 6-0) collected doubles victories for the Panthers.

Quinne Smith collected a singles victory for Ellwood City in defeat.

Ellwood City (1-2 Overall) will next travel to face Central Valley on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

WOLVERINES KNOCK OFF NEW CASTLE, AWAIT RIVAL RIVERSIDE

Ellwood City bested New Castle 2-1 on Thursday after taking the lead late in the game.

After rallying to tie the game at one in the fifth inning, Gino Biondi swatted an RBI single to push the Wolverines ahead.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Ellwood City Wolverines pitchers struck out six, while New Castle sat down five.

New Castle got on the board in the third inning after starter Aaron Lake induced Alex Rodgers to hit into a fielder’s choice scoring the game’s first run.

The Hurricanes committed an error in the fifth inning which helped Ellwood City tie the game at one.

Lake earned the win for Ellwood City, giving up three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Carlo Desalvo took the loss for New Castle.
The starter went seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out five and walking four.

Jacob Biskup led the Wolverines with two hits in two at-bats while Biondi’s game deciding single rounded out the three hits offensively for ELlwood City.

Ellwood City (4-2 Overall) will host rival Riverside for a section-opening tilt on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
