The Ellwood City Wolverines softball team used a four run sixth inning to defeat Riverside 9-5 on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Wolverines were the first to get on the board in the back-and-forth rivalry contest when Ayla Sterner induced Alexis Beck to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.
Danny Rosenberger doubled to left field in the second inning to help Riverside tie the game at one a piece as the game would feature several lead changes.
Ellwood City jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the second inning after Kiley Leviere grounded out, and Rylee Prestopine singled, each scoring one run.
Riverside made the score 4-3 in the top of the third after Adde Burry hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Ava Cummings smacked a two-run homer to left field.
Kaylee Palombi grounded out, which helped Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines tie the game at four in the bottom of the third.
Riverside took the lead once again in the top of the fourth as Charlie Bissell singled, scoring one run, to give the Panthers the leg up, 5-4.
Kiley Leviere walked, which helped Ellwood City tie the game at five in the bottom of the fifth before the four run sixth inning surge.
Ellwood City took the lead thanks to singles by Amber McQuistion, Kaylee Palombi, and Crystal Folino.
Amber McQuistion earned the win for Ellwood City, allowing 11 hits and five runs (four earned) over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. Ayla Sterner took the loss for Riverside, offering four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out one and walking five.
Alexis Beck and Kaylee Palombi each collected two hits for Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines. Crystal Folino, Kiley Leviere, and Kaylee Palombi each drove in two runs for Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines. Sara Schwarz led Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing five walks for the game. Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines turned one double play in the game.
Riverside Varsity Panthers amassed 11 hits in the game. Kara Sutphen, Danny Rosenberger, Saeryn Hoover, and Charlie Bissell each collected two hits for Riverside Varsity Panthers. Ava Cummings led Riverside Varsity Panthers with two runs batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-4 on the day.
Ellwood City (2-1 Overall) play at home on Monday against Shenango
