The Ellwood City boys golf team celebrated the season with the annual banquet held Monday evening at Vinny’s Restaurant in Ellwood City.
“The 2024 golf season has been one of growth, resilience, and notable performances for our team,” said head coach Sam Barry. “From the opening tee-off to the final putt, our players showcased dedication, skill, and an unwavering competitive spirit.”
Here’s a look back at how the season unfolded for the boys on their way to an historic season:
Early season success led to record breaking performances. The season kicked off with a strong showing in the opening matches. As the season progressed the team posted more key victories that ultimately led to the teams undefeated section championship season. The boys finished the season with a 15-0 mark and set the single season record for victories in a single season (15) and are currently on a 17 match winning streak.
Mid-season, saw the achievements of individuals flourish. At the MAC Invitational Jordan Keller tied the high school 18 hole scoring record, previously held by Jim Shingelton, with a four under par 68 to capture the MAC Individual title. Jordan became the first Ellwood City golfer to capture the title. Jordan was joined by teammate Nathan Kennedy who posted a 75 to finish 5th. Kennedy’s great play continued as he set the mark at the WPIAL Sectionals leading the field with an even par 72. He along with Keller advanced the WPIAL regional’s at Youghiogheny CC. Jordan would continue his consistent play and advance to the WPIAL Finals for which he qualified for the PIAA State Championships, in State College PA. Jordan became only the 4th Ellwood golfer to advance to the PIAA Individual championships.
The season drew to a close in the WPIAL Team Semifinals as the team placed 4th out of the 10 team field, failing to finish in the top 3 and advance to the WPIAL championships. The future looks bright for the team. With a strong mix of returning players and an influx of promising talent, the foundation is set for an even better 2025 season. The lessons learned this year—both from victories and setbacks—will most likely provide the necessary momentum for the 2025 season.
