After collecting an opening round win on Tuesday in the 73rd Annual Little League Tournament, Ellwood City squad could not advance any further, falling twice on Saturday, first to Laurel and again to Neshannock, each by a 5-2 count that eliminated the tournament host.
Neshannock earned the tournament championship with two victories over Laurel on Sunday.
Ellwood City’s Joey Zito won the the 23rd Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby at Freidhoff Field. Zito launched eight home runs to defeat 29 other contestants from the tournament. Ty Cook of Neshannock was the runner-up with four home runs.
On Saturday night, and backed by a relief gem by Bean Owens, Neshannock downed Ellwood City, 5-2. Owens retired nine straight batters, eight by strikeout, to save the victory for Neshannock. Trey Kissick smacked a two-run homer and Jack Rizzo, Danny Schachern and Owens all doubled and singled to lead Neshannock.
Earlier in the afternoon on Saturday, Laurel scored three runs in the first inning without a hit inning and went on to defeat Ellwood City, 5-2. Three walks, an error and three wild pitches allowed Laurel to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Nick Courson allowed just one-hit to gain the save.
On Sunday, Neshannock rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Laurel, 7-6, to win the 73rd Ellwood City Little League Tournament at Freidhoff Field on Sunday night. Gabe Ponziani ripped a single off the centerfield fence to score Ty Cook with the game-winning hit. Neshannock, after losing their opening game, reeled off six straight wins to win the title.
