Eclipse 2024: What To Expect

source: nasa.gov

No human action can disrupt the incessant dance of the cosmos, and the Moon’s shadow will not wait on you if you’re not ready.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a total solar eclipse. It is the second total eclipse of the 21st Century and will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044.

According to NASA, the path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton.

The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can momentarily remove their eclipse glasses (which are not the same as regular sunglasses). It is only safe to remove your eclipse glasses during what’s known as totality, the brief period of time when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun.

What you can see during a total solar eclipse depends on the weather and the location from which you view it. You need clear skies to have the full eclipse experience, with a clear view of the Sun and Moon. However, the eerie daytime darkness associated with eclipses is still noticeable with cloud cover.

According to the NASA website, Erie, Pennsylvania will succumb to the eclipse beginning at 2:02 p.m. EST on Monday, with totality beginning at 3:16 p.m. and ending at 3:20 p.m. The eclipse will fully pass Erie at 4:30 p.m.

Locally, and according to Eclipse2024.org, Ellwood City will begin to experience a partial phase at 2:00 p.m. and will experience the maximum amount of sun coverage at 3:17 p.m.  Current weather for Ellwood City on Monday is mostly cloudy skies, with a high around 68F and a 24% chance of rain according to the National Weather Service. The Ellwood City Area School District is planning an early dismissal on Monday due to the solar eclipse.

Eclipse2024.org offers eclipse information and resources for the Ellwood City area. View an animation of the Sun oriented as it will appear in the sky from Ellwood City.

Interested in more totality? Travel times to Mercer County vary, but as an example in just one hour you can commute to Greenville, PA and join one of three viewing opportunities in Northern Mercer County as the Greenville Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a viewing party at the Greenville Sports Complex beginning at 11:00 a.m.

And finally, what to do with your solar eclipse glasses after Monday’s spectacle?  Solar eclipse glasses can be sent to Latin America for children to enjoy the August 2024 eclipse. Send them to Eclipse Glasses USA by August 1st so they can be sent to kids before the next eclipse. Their address:
