Ellwood City Routs Laurel In 72nd Little League Tournament Behind Weisz, Nardone

Ellwood City downed Laurel 13-4 Tuesday night in the 72nd Ellwood City Little League Tournament at Freidhoff Field.

Ellwood City broke open a close contest with a seven-run outburst in the fourth inning to pull away from Laurel.

Anderson Weisz led Ellwood City with a home run, double, and single and Joey Nardone added a double and two singles.

Elwood City opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Nardone led off the inning with a single. Nardone was erased on a fielder’s choice by Luca Carsele. After a walk to Weisz, Mike Pelissier’s RBI single gave Ellwood City a 1-0 lead.

Laurel quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Ellwood City regained the lead in the top of the second inning.

Tyler Clark led off the inning with a double to right field. With one out, Gino Barberio walked and Nico Begley followed with an RBI-single to slice the deficit to 3-2. Reece VanKirk walked, Nardone followed with a two-run double scoring Barberio and Begley to give Ellwood City a 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Ellwood City erupted for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Clark led off with a walk and Cam Boydell followed with a double. Barberio drew a base on balls to load the bases. With one out, VanKirk was hit by a pitch scoring Clark to increase the Ellwood City lead to 5-3. Max Sedgewick reached on an error scoring Boydell to raise the lead to 6-3. Nardone reached on an error scoring Barberio to make the score 7-3. Carsele reached on an error scoring VanKirk to up the lead to 8-3. Weisz ripped a two-run double scoring and Nardone and Carsele to raise the lead to 10-3. Mason Bable followed with a double scoring Weisz to up the Ellwood City lead to 11-3.

Ellwood City added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning an a single by Nardone and home run by Weisz to make the score 13-3. Laurel closed the scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Weisz led Ellwood City with home run, double, single, walk and four RBI. Nardone doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs. Clark doubled and walked and Bable and Boydell added doubles. Begley singled and walked and Pelissier and Joey Zito added singles. Barberio drew two walks and VanKirk was hit by a pitch and walked. Courson led Laurel with a double, a hit by pitch and two RBI. Zwolenik with a singled with two walks and Benton singled and was hit by a pitch. Michaels was hit by a pitch and walked twice.

Ellwood City next plays Shenango on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. at Freidhoff Field as the 72nd annual Little League Tournament continues.  Central Valley plays Neshannock prior to the Ellwood City contest.
