Riverside used a stellar performance by sophomore Christian Lucarelli Tuesday to wrap up a two game sweep of Mohawk and to collect its undefeated section championship.
The Panthers (17-0 Overall, 12-0 Section 1-3A) pounced on the Warriors early Tuesday, putting up six runs in the first inning behind RBIs by Hunter Garvin, Mitch Garvin, Sam Barber, and Sean Hayes. Riverside added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to wrap up the 10-0 victory.
Lucarelli, a Duke University commit, tossed a one-hitter, striking out 13 batters in his six inning performance. Lucarelli now has double-digit strikeouts in his last four starts..
The shutout comes on the heels of the Panthers 10-2 victory over Mohawk on Monday. In similar fashion, Riverside got ahead early, leading 7-0 before the host Warriors could put runs on the board.
A big four-run third inning was powered with RBIs by Ashton Schlosser, Bo Fornataro, Mitch Garvin, and Drake Fox. Riverside scattered 13 hits in the game. Evan Burry(3-4, 2 runs, SB), Garvin, Schlosser, McDade, and Fornataro (2-4, 2B) all managed multiple hits for the victors.
Ronnie Harper earned the win for Riverside on Monday. The southpaw went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. Hunter Garvin and Fox entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Mohawk wraps up its regular season 12-5 Overall with a section mark of 7-4, tied with Shenango who defeated Ellwood City Tuesday.
Riverside will next look to the WPIAL Playoffs with its unblemished regular season on the books. Avonworth (Section 2-3A) and Yough (Section 4-3A) join the Panthers as WPIAL Class-AAA section champions. Freeport and East Allegheny are co-champs in Section 3-3A).
