Central Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead and withstood a furious late inning rally by the Lady Wolverines to come out with a 5-4 victory on Saturday.
After the Warriors made it 5-0 in the fourth by scoring three times, Ellwood City started its rally in the sixth inning.
Aliya Garroway led off with a bloop double down the right field line and scored on a single to left by Sara Schwarz. Schwarz moved over to third after an error and a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout to second by Keira Rozanski.
Things really got interesting in the seventh as Lexi Beck led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Kiley Leviere. Julia Nardone loaded the bases as her ground ball to short was misplayed for an error. Garroway hit a deep sacrifice fly to center scoring Beck and moved the runners over to second and third. Amber Mcquistion singled home Leviere to make it a one run game, but Nardone was not able to move up. Schwarz blooped a single into right to load the bases with one out. Rozanski laced a line drive right at the shortstop who doubled off Nardone at third and Central Valley escaped with the win.
Beck and Schwarz led the nine hit attack with two singles apiece. Garroway doubled while Mcquistion, Rozanski, Ellie Kalantzis, and Natalee Gillin contributed singles.
After dismantling Quaker Valley on Friday 17-0, the loss on Saturday puts Ellwood City at a 3-2 mark in Section 2-3A. On Friday, Freshmen Ava Dausman and Mia Meredith each collected their first varsity base hits during a 12-run third inning that smothered Quaker Valley and evoked the mercy rule.
The Lady Wolverines (7-2 Overall) return to action on Tuesday as the Union Scotties visit Stiefel Park for a 5:00 p.m. start.
