Ellwood City Varsity Softball Easily Dispatches Beaver Falls; Junior High Knocks Off Riverside

The Wolverines varsity softball team scored 15 runs for the second consecutive game – this time it took just three innings for the mercy rule to end things as they beat Beaver Falls 15-0 Wednesday evening.

Ellwood City outfielder Lexi Beck capped a five run first inning attack with a two run double to left field scoring Keira Rozanski and Ellie Kalantzis.

The Wolverines scored seven more runs in the second inning, powered by a two-run double by Natalie Gillin and a two-run triple by Aliya Garroway.

After Beaver Falls went down in order in the third, Ellwood City walked things off in the home half with three quick runs. After a walk to Mia Meredith, Kalantzis reached on an error, and Gillin singled up the middle to score Crystal Folino.  A walk to Liz Mihalko and a HBP to Delaney Sturgeon made it 14-0 and Garroway ended things with a bases loaded walk.

Garroway, Gillin, and Beck led the nine hit attack with two hits apiece. Schwarz, Rozanski, and Kalantzis added singles. Amber Mcquistion got the win as she improved her record to 5-1 on the season. It took her just 42 pitches to cruise through 3 innings as she fanned three and walked one.

The Lady Wolverines will look to go 3-1 in the section as they travel to Sewickley on Friday to face Quaker Valley. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

Ellwood City Junior High Softball Knocks Off Riverside

The Wolverines Junior High Softball team held on for a 6-4 victory over its rival Riverside on Wednesday.

Ellwood City led 6-1 after a four run fifth frame, and withstood a rally from the visiting Panthers. Riverside scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to tighten the margin, but Ellwood City’s starting pitcher Dakota Hicks, who went the distance, slammed the door.

The Wolverines managed only three hits in the victory. They were aided by three walks and five Riverside errors. The teams combined for nine errors in the contest.

Rylee Prestopine led the offense with two hits, including a double and RBI.

Barzan collected two hits for Riverside in defeat. The Panthers collected five hits – all singles. M Fryer took the loss on the rubber for Riverside, she went five innings allowing three earned runs and striking out five hitters.

Ellwood City middle school improved to 2-0 on the young season. Next game is Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Central Valley at home.
