Hunter Garvin hit his second home run in as many days, this time a pivotal fifth inning blast during a five run rally for the host Panthers as they pulled away and defeated Ellwood City 7-5 Tuesday afternoon.
Riverside defeated Ellwood City on Monday 9-2 in Ewing Park in the first game of the home-and-home RivEll series.
On Tuesday, centerfielder Bo Fornataro homered for Riverside with a first inning to stage the Panthers to an early 2-0 lead.
Ellwood City responded with five runs over its next three innings, powered by RBIs from Isiah Lutz, Jordan Keller, Nick Magnifico, Will Nardone, and Aaron Lake.
Trailing 5-2 entering their home half of the fourth inning, Riverside responded with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead. Garvin’s solo blast in the fifth coupled with an RBI single by Sam Barber put Riverside ahead.
Garvin also earned the win on the mound, pitching four inning of shutout baseball in relief. Garvin struck out seven batters while allowing only one hit.
Darren McDade (2 SBs), Mitch Garvin, Evan Burry, and Sean Hayes all singled as part of the Panthers seven hit offensive attack.
Nardone took the loss for Ellwood City. The starter surrendered seven runs on seven hits over four and a third innings, striking out six and walking one. The Wolverines racked up six hits on the day. Nardone and Magnifico each had multiple hits for the Ellwood City. Nardone picked up a double in defeat.
The game featured eight errors combined by both defenses.
Riverside (2-0 Overall) next travels to Knoch on Wednesday while Ellwood City will look to get in the win column when they host New Brighton on Wednesday.
