Ellwood City Bocce Team Advances To PIAA/SOPA State Championships

The Ellwood City Bocce Team has advanced to the PIAA/SOPA State Championships!

The team collected three victories and a first place finish at the regional championships held last week at Geneva College.

There were 10 schools from the different sections represented. The top two teams advanced, and the Wolverines were one of them.

Ellwood City defeated Bethel Park, 7-2, and Pine Richland, 5-3, before wrapping up their impressive performance with a 12-2 victory over Chartiers Valley in their final match.

Last month the bocce team finished first in league play, qualifying for regionals.

The six student-athlete team consists of: Anthony DiBuono, Ryan Odom, Joy Mangiapane, Jean Kreiling, Maddy McCommons, Braden Freed

Last month, the Wolverines took the gold medal in the Northwest division league play with victories over Mohawk and Knoch to advance to the regionals. The Ellwood City Bocce Team is comprised of two competing teams among eight teams in the Northwest division.

Unified Indoor Bocce State Championships will be held at the GIANT Center in Hershey, PA on Thursday, March 24th.

A Unified Indoor Bocce team roster must be composed of a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 players. A team must have a minimum of 3 Special-Olympics-eligible students (defined as students with an intellectual disability, developmental disability, or cognitive delay) and a minimum of 3 students without an intellectual disability.

The Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports program is supported by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the Bureau of Special Education, Pennsylvania Department of Education.
