Unified Bocce Playoffs Begin Tuesday

Ellwood City will host the Unified Bocce playoffs on Tuesday with both Ellwood City and Riverside teams represented. Eight teams on four courts will compete in a two round single elimination tournament. Each division gets two courts. Game start at 3:30 p.m. with Beaver North Division top seed Blackhawk playing #4 Ellwood City and the Lawrence Division top seed Laurel will playing #4 New Castle. The 3-seed Riverside Panthers, who qualified for the playoffs earlier this month, will play #2 Beaver Falls to begin its playoff journey. Ellwood City’s Unified Bocce team earned a third place finish at the PIAA Interscholastic Unified Bocce State Championships last week in Hershey, PA. The Wolverines captured bronze with a thrilling 6-4 win over Pennridge. “When football talks the game of inches, bocce is truly the game of inches,” says head coach John DiBuono. Ellwood City Bocce Team Advances To PIAA/SOPA State Championships

The Ellwood City Bocce Team has advanced to the PIAA/SOPA State Championships! The team collected three victories and a first place finish at the regional championships held last week at Geneva College. There were 10 schools from the different sections represented. The top two teams advanced, and the Wolverines were one of them. Ellwood City defeated Bethel Park, 7-2, and Pine Richland, 5-3, before wrapping up their impressive performance with a 12-2 victory over Chartiers Valley in their final match. The Ellwood City Bocce team is making strides according to head coach John Dibuono. The team split decisions against Butler and Seneca Valley this past week. On January 10th the Ellwood City bocce team took on Butler. Butler prevailed in the matchup three games to one. The team faced Seneca Valley on Wednesday January 18th. The Ellwood City Bocce team is ‘rolling’ along with early season success. The team is currently 2-0, with victories against Grove City, the defending state champions, and Slippery Rock. Their latest victory, and win, had been against Slippery Rock on Thursday, February 14. The team went into a sudden death frame after both teams had been tied 3-3 when time ran out.
