Historical Society Scholarship Submission Deadline Is Quickly Approaching

ATTENTION 2023 GRADUATING SENIORS — the annual Ellwood City Area Historical Society Scholarship submission deadline is quickly approaching!

The deadline is Friday, March 31, 2023 before 1:00 p.m.

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will award two $1,500.00 scholarships to two (2) graduating seniors. 2023 Graduating seniors who live in the Ellwood City School District or the Riverside High School School District who have been accepted to attend a College, Trade School, or Performing Arts School are eligible to apply. Applications may be received from the High School Student Guidance Counselors at both Lincoln and Riverside High Schools. Applications are also available at the Ellwood City History Center.

Each applicant is asked to prepare a 400-600 word essay, research and documented about the Ellwood City area. The essay must answer the following question. What is the effect that the local ethnic and social clubs had on the assimilation of immigrants in Ellwood City? Please remember that the applicant’s name or family identity must not be in the body of the essay.

Applicants are welcome to stop by the History Center located at 310 5th Street, Ellwood City, PA during normal business hours Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00-2:00 p.m. for general information, to view previous essay topics, and to receive research help. The telephone number for the History Center is 724-752-2021.

The society is excited to announce we are also going to be awarding the Marlene Painter Scholarship. This scholarship is going to be awarded to a 2023 Lincoln High School graduate who is majoring in education. This is a $10,000 scholarship. The funds will be awarded in increments of $2,000.00 each semester, as long as the student remains in an educational major. Each applicant is asked to prepare a 400-600 word essay. The essay must be written on the topic: “Why I want to be a teacher”.

Please remember that the applicant’s name or family identity must not be in the body of the essay. Applications may be received from the High School Student Guidance Counselors at Lincoln High School. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 31, 2023 before 1:00 p.m.

The History Center has awarded scholarships since 1999, and has contributed $72,000.00 to 48 graduating seniors.

Last year, Emily Fox, of Riverside High School, and Mark VanHorn, of Lincoln High School, were the graduating seniors who each earned the 2022 scholarships.
