In a collective sweep for Ellwood City teams, three Wolverine teams collected victories on Wednesday.
Varsity Softball improved its undefeated record, varsity baseball defeated Freedom Area, and junior high softball got the best of rival Riverside.
Wolverines Softball Defeats Beaver Falls, Record Now 5-0
The offense remained potent, this time scoring seven runs in the first inning as the Lady Wolverines run ruled Beaver Falls by a score of 12-2.
Ellwood City got things started with one out in the first. Kyla Servick legged out an infield hit and motored around to third on a two base throwing error. Aliya Garroway wasted little time scoring Servick as she laced a double into the right center field gap. Mollie Street plated Garroway with a triple into right to make it 2-0. Three consecutive walks to Julia Nardone, Katelyn Wehman, and Keira Rozanski made it 3-0. Paige Wearing singled in courtesy runner Lizzie Mihalko with a grounder up the middle. A walk to Angie Nardone loaded the bases. Servick hit a roller to the third baseman that was thown away to make it 6-0. Garroway collected her second rbi of the inning when she drew a bases loaded walk to finish the scoring.
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in its first half inning but the Wolverines answered right back in the second as they added two runs of their own.
Julia Nardone led off with another walk but was forced at second on a pop up from Wehman. With two outs, Wehman scored on a single into shallow center field by Ellie Kalantzis. Kalantzis scored all the way from first with some heads up baserunning as Wearing hit a single to right field.
Ellwood City made it 10-2 in the third as Garroway received her second walk of the game with one out and went to third on a hard single to left by Street. Garroway scored on a fielder’s choice grounder off the bat of Julia Nardone.
After the Tigers went down in order in their half of the third inning, the Wolverines tacked on another run with some two out magic in the fourth. Angie Nardone singled to right and scored on a triple into the right field corner by Servick.
Ellwood City made it 12-2 with another run in the fifth inning. Julia Nardone hit a one out single up the middle and moved to second on a grounder by Wehman. Rozanski plated Nardone with a double to the gap in left center field.
Eight players banged out 12 hits for the Wolverines well balanced offensive attack. Julia Nardone got the win in the circle as she scattered 7 hits over 5 innings. She gave up two earned runs as she fanned 6 and walked just one. The Lady Wolverines will look to make it 6-0, 3-0 in the section as they travel to Laurel Thursday for a non section showdown with the three time defending AA WPIAL Champion Spartans. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
Wolverines Baseball Bests Freedom
Ellwood City collected a road victory over Freedom Area, 4-1 on Wednesday.
Ellwood City racked up nine hits on the day. Isaiah Lutz, Ashton Wilson, and Bucky Biskup all had multiple hits for the Wolverines. Wilson rapped two doubles while Biskup scored two runs to lead the offense.
Alexander Roth earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Ellwood City. The fireballer allowed four hits and one run over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Alexander’s younger brother, Joseph, threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen to earn the save for the Wolverines.
Ellwood City (3-3 Overall) collected all the runs it would need in the first inning when Joseph Roth singled on the first pitch of his at bat, scoring two runs, to push the visiting Wolverines to an early 2-0 advantage.
Lucas Snavely took the loss for Freedom Area. Snavely lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out five and walking one.
Ellwood City Junior High Softball Defeats Riverside
The Wolverines Junior High softball team defeated rival Riverside 11-1 at home on Wednesday afternoon.
Ellwood City struck early and late, posting five runs in the first inning and then four runs in the sixth inning to envoke the mercy rule.
The offense was powered by five extra base hits including a homerun by shortstop Dakota Hicks. Nine Wolverines collected hits on the afternoon with Kennedy Brown (1B, 2B), Amber McQuiston, and Alexis Beck (1B, 2B) posting multiple hit efforts in the victory.
Three Wolverine pitchers combined for the victory, each tossing two innings in the contest. Combined the hurlers struck out 12 Panthers and allowed only one hit on the afternoon.
