Meals on Wheels Seeking Cook, Volunteers, Clients

Meals on Wheels, the beloved program that offers nutritional meals to those in need is looking for a cook.

The position will be a Monday-Friday job from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The person will order and receive foods, prepare the foods, and organize the volunteers. Applicants are required to have a Safe Serve Certification, which program organizer Gina McKenna said is easy to obtain.

“Meals on Wheels is a wonderful environment to work in and to meet new friends and new people,” McKenna said.

Interested applicants can apply here: Job Application; Email: EllwoodMOW@gmail.com; or call McKenna at 724-730-9316.

The cook position will begin work on Oct 1 and became available following the retirement of Mary Jo Carusone who has been cooking the meals since April of 2019.

In addition to hiring for a cook, McKenna said the organization is also seeking membership. She said the organization has seen a decline from between 45 to 50 clients to now 33.

There aren’t strict qualifications for seniors to receive meals. McKenna said the main qualification is the ability to pay. Membership is $100 per month for two meals a day—one cold and one hot. New clients are enrolled on Mondays.

McKenna said the organization is also always accepting volunteers for food packing and driving.

“The organization and it’s future depends on volunteers,” she said. “It’s very rewarding. You get to interact with clients, and sometimes your face is the only one they see.”

Anyone interested in signing up for Meals on Wheels or for becoming a volunteer can contact McKenna: 724-730-9316.

“We hope to be able to provide for more people in the future,” she said.
