McCommons Wins LHS Class of ’57 Scholarship Competition

Molly McCommons was the top winner in the Lincoln High School Class of 1957 scholarship competition.

She won the $5.000 scholarship and the $500 award for writing the best essay.

Molly, daughter of Kathy McCommons of Wood St., will continue her education at Grove City College where she will “follow my passion for history and political science” in preparation for law school. Her goal is to be a child advocacy lawyer and possibly run for political office.

Valedictorian of her class, she used the essay competition to explain her journey as a child abuse survivor and how she overcame many adversities in her home life. She is founder-president of KidsToo, an outlet for domestic and child abuse survivors, that she describes as one of her “most rewarding community engagements.”

In addition to excelling in the classroom, she was a seven-time National Academic Games qualifier and award winner; placed first in two divisions in the western region of the state and fifth on the national level for the Academic Games League of America; and ranked in the top 10 percent of all SAT test-takers in Pennsylvania. Captain of the golf and tennis teams, she was a Beaver County Girls Athlete of the Week.

Molly was president of National Honor Society, International Club and Peer Leadership; senior class treasurer; secretary of Student Council; captain of Mock Trial; and was an after-school tutor in math and history. She also was lead director of The Hartman News, in which sixth graders published a morning broadcast each day, and developed a two-week summer video production training program for sixth graders.

She finds time to work at Barry’s Ice Cream, do babysitting and yard work. She’s also been involved in the Carpenters’ Project, Salvation Army bell ringing and serving as a Sunday school aide.

This is the 13th year the 1957 class has offered scholarships and the amount awarded is now $70,000.
