Word Alive Church to Host Food Distribution Today

Word Alive Church, 124 Scenic Hill Blvd., will be hosting a food distribution today (May 27) from 12 to 2 p.m.

According to Word Alive’s Lead Pastor Matthew Reynolds there are no requirements to qualify for the event and he is happy to be able to help Ellwood City’s residents.

“A church in new castle called us two weeks ago and wondered if we would want to help distribute free food every other Wednesday in Ellwood City,” he said “We of course, said yes.”

Reynolds said each car will receive 6 -1/2 gallons of milk, a box of mixed dairy products and a box of mixed produce and fruits. The only thing the volunteers ask is that participants remain in their vehicles.

“We will have everyone stay in their cars to help practice social distancing,” Reynolds said.

Associate Pastor Gail Davis said he is looking forward to the event.

“It’s a good thing,” Davis said. “We want to be a blessing to Ellwood City.”

According to FeedingAmerica.org, millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day. The following statistics provided by the organization don’t even include statistics during the pandemic when unemployment and food shortages have been a trend in America.

  • According to the USDA’s 2019 Household Food Insecurity in the United States report, more than 37 million people in the United States struggle with hunger.
  • In 2018, 14.3 million American households were food insecure with limited or uncertain access to enough food.
  • Households with children are more likely to experience food insecurity. Currently, more than 11 million children live in food-insecure households.
  • Every community in the country is home to families who struggle with food insecurity including rural and suburban communities.
  • Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and need to rely on their local food banks and other hunger relief organizations for support.
