Ellwood City Borough Council Votes to ‘Disapprove’ Councilwoman’s Facebook Comment

Ellwood City Borough Council voted on Monday to officially “disapprove” of a Facebook comment that was posted by Councilwoman Lisa Guerrera more than a month ago.

Council including Guerrera herself voted unanimously to disapprove of the comment. There was no discussion regarding the topic during Monday’s meeting. Some residents have called for Guerrera to step down from her council seat, a move Guerrera isn’t willing to make. Council does not have the authority to unseat her, nor were they asking her to step down. The vote was just a declaration of disapproval, according to Council President, George Celli.

During the April 13th Council Agenda meeting Guerrera spoke out saying it was a completely inappropriate comment that she regrets making.

The post appeared mid-April on a personal Facebook page of a former Ellwood City resident and was shared hundreds of times throughout the county. The comment said, “Best thing that could happen would be both of them getting it and dying, along with the rest of the elected officials of the Democratic party.” The comment was made on a post that included a picture of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders bumping elbows instead of shaking hands in an effort to “social distance.”

Guerrera insisted the comment wasn’t meant to be harmful and was made before the true severity of the Coronavirus was realized. She referred to the viral sharing of her comment as a “smear campaign.”

The councilwoman said she has been in public service for more than 20 years including currently working in a long- term skilled nursing facility.

“I would never wish any harm to any person,” she said.
