Riverside Upends McGuffey, Advances To WPIAL Semifinals

The Riverside Panthers offensive onslaught continued as it trounced sixth-seeded McGuffey, 41-27, on Friday night in their WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal contest at Montour.

Riverside (8-3 overall) rolled for over 330 total yards of offense in their victory over McGuffey (9-3 overall) one week after dropping a 40-spot on #3 Burgettstown.

After exchanging scores to begin the contest, Riverside’s offense answered and then used a defensive pick-six to stretch their first half lead to a comfortable 27-6 margin. Nate Sciarro picked off McGuffey quarterback Marshall Whipkey and took it 70 yards for his second touchdown.

Riverside ran away with the game in the third quarter, leading 41-13 at one point in the second half before McGuffey collected two late scores to close the final margin.

Panthers quarterback Ben Hughes finished with four offensive touchdowns, all of the ground rushing variety to pace the Riverside offense.

Riverside will next face unbeaten 2-seeded Avonworth in the WPIAL semifinals at a site yet to be determined. The Antelopes beat No. 10 New Brighton, 38-13, on Friday.

Riverside is the first No. 14 seed to reach the WPIAL semifinals since Central Valley did it in 2010. The Panthers last reached the semifinals in both 2016 and 2017, falling to Steel Valley both times.

Two other MAC Conference foes were bounced from the WPIAL playoff on Friday. Freedom and Neshannock were both shutout in their quarterfinal losses. (VIEW FULL BRACKET)
