Wolverines Find Success In Running Game But Not Enough Against The Eagles

The official start to the 2019 WPIAL football season began last night as 118 teams were in action Friday. For the Wolverines, they were competing in their second game of the season against the Serra Catholic Eagles from McKeesport, PA. Both teams were looking to improve on their Week Zero results as Serra Catholic slipped by Yough 9-0 while the Wolverines were coming off of a 48-0 loss to Beaver Falls.

The first quarter involved 5 total drives between the teams with the biggest opportunity for points being for the Wolverines as they punted on their first possession. The Serra Catholic punt returner fumbled the return and the ball rolled back to the 13-yard line where the Wolverines pounced on the ball. Unfortunately, the Wolverines offense could not capitalize on the turnover as the score read 0-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter started with a bang as QB Ryan Gibbons was back to pass on the Wolverines 4th drive of the game as LB Terrell Booth undercut the route and picked the pass off. Booth returned the interception for a short touchdown as the Eagles took a 7-0 lead.

Quickly back the other way, the Wolverines fought back with their own score as RB Tyler Powell ran 45 yards right up the middle, bouncing off of three defenders for the first Wolverines touchdown on the season. The extra point by Levi Smith was good as the score read tied at 7. Just as the Wolverines tied the game, the Eagles added another touchdown just over 2 minutes later as WR Machai Brooks ran the ball from 6 yards out, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead going into halftime.

The Eagles received the second-half kickoff and made quick use of the football as RB Ray Holmes ran in from 5 yards out to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead with the PAT good by K Joe Filino. Down, but not out, the Wolverines made a little drive of their own as they took 5 minutes to cap off a 68-yard drive as RB Tyler Powell ran in from 5 yards out. The PAT was good by Levi Smith as the score was now 21-14 Eagles.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Wolverines would get in the rest of the game as the Eagles would add a score by RB Jayvon Holt from 48 yards out just a minute later to make the score 27-14 and finally a late 4th quarter score by RB Holmes from 1 yard out made the final score 33-14 Serra Catholic. The Wolverines finished the game with 155 offensive yards, 146 better than last week. RB Tyler Powell finished with 126 yards on 27 carries along with the Wolverines two touchdowns as he was named the player of the game for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines fall to 0-2 (0-0) on the season and will play their first conference game next week against 2-0 (1-0) New Brighton Lions at Helling Stadium (Home) next Friday (09/06). Game time is slated for 7 PM – we will begin our live video broadcast around 6:45 PM. You can catch all the action on our YouTube and social media pages during each game!
