The Ellwood City Wolverines softball team rallied and nabbed the lead late in an 11-10 victory over South Allegheny on Monday in the second round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
The victory over the #2 seed South Allegheny team was the Wolverines second consecutive extra-inning victory after knocking off Freeport last week.
The game was tied at ten with Wolverines batting in the top of the ninth when senior Natalia Greco doubled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring the decisive run.
Freshman Angie Nardone collected four hits in five at-bats to help lead Wolverines to victory. Nardone doubled in the second, singled in the third, singled in the seventh, and singled in the eighth.
After South Allegheny opened up scoring in the first inning and stretched their early lead two 4-1 after two innings, the Wolverines tallied three runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught came from a single by Nardone and a double by Greco.
South Allegheny responded and scored three runs in the fifth inning. South Allegheny big bats were led by Aliyah Rotharmel, Kalsey Denk, and Madison Kirkwood, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Wolverine senior Ariana Garroway went yard in the sixth inning, a solo home run, to bring Ellwood City within two runs which would come across in the top half of the seventh inning to tie the ballgame.
Nardone was the winning pitcher for Wolverines. She allowed 14 hits and ten runs over nine innings, striking out two.
Wolverines had 17 hits in the game. Nardone, Greco, Anna Ferrucci, Maria Ioanilli, Kyla Servick, and Garroway each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Nardone led Wolverines with four hits in five at-bats. Greco tallied three extra-base hits on the day.
South Allegheny tallied 14 hits. Mikala Swearingen, Kirkwood, and Kirkwood all managed multiple hits for South Allegheny. Cortney Woytovich led things off in the circle for South Allegheny. She lasted nine innings, allowing 17 hits and 11 runs while striking out five.
#10 seeded Ellwood City will next battle #6 seed Keystone Oaks in the semifinals of the WPIAL Playoffs on Wednesday, May 22nd. The game is scheduled to be played at Hampton High School with a 5:00pm first pitch. The winner will advance to the championship game and play either #1 Avonworth or #4 South Park. [VIEW BRACKET]
