Early Lead For Wolverine Baseball Sets Stage For Victory

The Ellwood City Wolverines boys grabbed an early lead on its way to a 6-5 victory over North Catholic at home on Wednesday.

The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the first frame, aided by an RBI double by senior Ricky Pitrelli and a passed ball by North Catholic catcher in the frame.

Pitrelli smacked two doubles (2-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 runs scored) in the contest and was one of two Wolverines to collect two hits on the day, joining fellow senior Brady Welsh (2-3, 2 runs scored) with multiple hits for the victors.

Ryan Hampton was credited with the victory for Ellwood City. He went four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two. Gibbons threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen. Gibbons recorded the last nine outs to earn the save for Ellwood City.

Tunstall took the loss for North Catholic. He allowed four hits and four runs over two-and-a-third innings, striking out one.

North Catholic launched two home runs on the day. Prentice went yard in the third inning. Allen went deep in the seventh inning when North Catholic clawed back to make it a one-run contest.

Ellwood City totaled eight hits in the game and didn’t commit a single error. Samuel DiCaprio made the most plays with eight.

North Catholic racked up seven hits on the day – all going for extra bases. Prentice and Alexander each had multiple hits for North Catholic.

The Wolverines now improve to 3-6 (2-3 section) on the season and will next host New Brighton at home on Tuesday, April 23 at 4:30pm.
