VARSITY SOFTBALL DEFEATED BY AVONWORTH

Walks and errors over the first two innings cost the Lady Wolverines dearly as they lost 9-3 to the Antelopes at Avonworth.  They are now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in section play.

Spotting a team a 7 run lead is usually not a good game plan, especially when the opponent is the number 1 ranked AAA team in the WPIAL.  Avonworth started the scoring in the bottom of the first as they scored two runs on a triple, two walks, and an error.

The Antelopes would make it 7-0 in the second inning as they were able to chase starting pitcher Madi Krugh before she was able to record an out.  The leadoff batter walked and advanced to second on a fielding error.  One runner would score on a double and three more would score on a homer to dead center field.  Freshman Angie Nardone was summoned to the circle with the Wolverines trailing 6-0. A single, groundout and single to right would bring in the 7th run of the game.

The Wolverines would attempt a comeback in the top of the third inning.  Maura Agostinelli got the inning started with a double into left field and was sacrificed to third with one out by Kali Barnett.  Ariana Garroway would bring Agostinelli in as her grounder to third was misplayed for an error.  After Garroway was advanced to second on a single by Anna Ferrucci, both would score on a two-out triple into right-center field by Natalia Greco.  The score remained at 7-3 as Nardone struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.

Avonworth completed the scoring in the fourth as they made it 9-3 with two singles, an error, and a sacrifice bunt.

The Lady Wolverines fought hard over the final three innings but just couldn’t get the big two-out hit.  They left a runner on second to end the fifth and left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh.  Although they were able to outhit Avonworth 9-7, the only number that matters is the final score.

Krugh took the loss in the circle as she gave up 6 runs in one inning of work.  She yielded 3 hits, walked 4 and struck out 1.  Nardone went the final five innings and scattered 4 hits.  She struck out 5 and walked 3.  Both teams committed 3 errors.

Ellwood will look to get the bad taste out of their mouth with a non-section doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  They will take on Poland, Ohio and the Union Scotties starting at 1 pm.  Both games will be at Union.

JUNIOR HIGH SOFTBALL TEAM DEFEATS NEW CASTLE

The Lady Wolverines batted around the order in the first 3 innings on Thursday afternoon as they defeated the Red Hurricanes 16-1 in another mercy rule affair.

Julia Nardone was masterful in the circle as she faced just three batters over the minimum to get the win.  She tossed a 1 hitter with two walks and 8 strikeouts.

Once again, Ellwood City started fast as they plated 5 runs in the first inning.  Nardone got it going with a leadoff double and scored on a single into right field by Keira Rozanski. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Rozanski scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Aliya Garroway.  Katelyn Wehman drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a rbi single by Kaylani Leos. Leos stole second and scored on a triple into the left-field corner by Maddie Hicks.  Hicks scored the fifth run of the inning on a rbi groundout by Trinity Arlet.

The Lady Wolverines made it 9-0 with a four-run second inning.  Nardone led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a wild pitch.  Rozanski and Garroway both walked and advanced on wild pitches.  Wehman loaded the bases with an infield single and Rozanski and Garroway scored on a two-base error to shortstop off the bat of Leos.  Leos scored the inning’s final run on a wild pitch.

After the Canes scored their lone run in the top of the third on a fluke inside the park home run, the Lady Wolverines put another 5 spots on the board in the home half of the inning to take a 14-1 lead.  Nardone led off with a single and stole second. Garroway brought her in with a double into left.  Garroway would score on back to back wild pitches.  Back to back walks by Wehman and Paige Wearing put runners on first and third to set up Maddie Hicks for a rbi double. Arlet brought Wearing in with her second rbi groundout and Chloe Duncan singled in Hicks.

The Wolverines ended the game by scoring 2 runs in the fourth. Nardone, who finished with 4 hits on the day, led off with a single.  A walk to Rozanski and HBP by Garroway loaded the bases.  Nardone scored on an error by the first baseman on a grounder by Wehman.  Wearing ended the game by scoring Rozanski on a single up the middle.

The young ladies will look for win #5 as they head to Mohawk on Tuesday.  First pitch is set for 4:30.
