Two Hartman Elementary Students Received Commendations

Front Row (Left to Right): Lt. David Kingston, Jacob Hembly, Mayor Anthony Court. Second Row (Left to Right): Councilman George Celli, Councilwoman Michele Lamenza, Ptl. Robert Magnifico

Two students, Jacob Hembly age 12 and Rondele Irving age 11, received commendations from the Ellwood City Police Department and Mayor Anthony Court for the students “Doing The Right Thing”. In addition, the ECPD presented the students with gift certificates from Domino’s Pizza for “Doing The Right Thing”.

On February 12, at 6:00 p.m., the two students were playing in the area of the 5th street bridge when they discovered a handgun lying in some weeds. The juveniles who attend Hartman Elementary School had been at assemblies at the school where Ellwood Police talked about the importance of gun safety and doing the right thing if they see or find a gun. The two students didn’t touch the gun, went for help and located a resident, Chuck Crawley, in front of his residence on Wampum Avenue. Crawley then contacted the Ellwood Police and advised Lt. Kingston of the situation and the students finding the gun. Ellwood Police responded to the location along Wampum Avenue with members of the ECVFD. The students then walked emergency responder personnel to where the gun was and the gun was then recovered. The gun was fully loaded.

Once recovered, Ellwood Police determined it as a semi-automatic handgun that had been reported stolen in New Brighton in September of 2016.

Special Thanks to Chris Pesce, store manager at Domino’s Pizza in Ellwood City for donating the gift certificates for the students.

  1. Oh, yeah. I remember reading all about this in the Ledger. Oh wait, this was’t newsworthy enough to make the Ledger.
