Ellwood City junior wrestler Austin Walley finished 4th overall in the 182-pound weight class in the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Tournament held at the GIANT Center in Hershey, PA.
Walley used a 10-2 decision over Kaleb Kamerer of Slippery Rock and a 9-6 decision over Hunter O’Connor of Jersey Shore Area to advance early in the tournament. The victories set up a rematch with Bryson Miller of Freedom Area in the semifinal.
Miller, however, earned his revenge earning his first victory in four tries against Walley, knocking off Walley 3-2 in an ultimate tie-breaker. It was the second time this season the two had needed extra time to decide a match, with Walley winning the first one at the MAC championships.
“I definitely did not wrestle my best tournament, but that happens,” said Walley. “Overall, medaling at the state tournament is a goal I’ve been shooting for a while now. One more year to get the gold!”
After one additional victory, Walley (36-5 overall) was defeated by Gavin Henry of Union City in the consolation final.
“Every single person is a quality wrestler in this tournament and every win Austin had was well earned,” said coach Craig Albets. “He is a true competitor and if I know Austin he is probably starting to prepare for next season today.”
Mt. Pleasant wrestler Dayton Pitzer (43-1) capped his superb freshman season by defeating Miller, 3-1, in the 182-pound final.
Ellwood City’s Donavan Chambers went 2-2 in the event at 132 pounds.
