Lincoln High School seniors who plan to continue their education can apply for a $5,000 scholarship and $500 essay award that will be given by the LHS Class of 1957.
Applications are available at the school guidance office where they must be submitted by April 1, 2019. Names of winners will be revealed at the annual awards assembly in May.
This will be the 11th year for the scholarship which was proposed at the ’57 class’ 60th anniversary reunion in July 2007 by its vice president, James Ammeen. In less than two years, class members donated $105,000 to start the fund, administered by the Beaver County Foundation.
Initial plans were to give $5,000 per year. However, more than that amount was given in three different years: $7,500 in 2012 for the class’ 55th anniversary; $7,000 shared by two students in 2017, the 60th anniversary; and $7,500 shared by two students last year when the $500 essay award was started.
The first scholarship was given in 2009 to Joshua Court. Other winners have been Brooke Shannon Ewing in 2010, Joshua David Guisler in 2011, Charity Stoll in 2012, Taylor Gearhart in 2013, Hunter James Kline in 2014, Marina T. Thetford in 2015, Cayla Renne Sudano in 2016, Zain M. Ansari and Dominic James Nocera in 2017, and Neisa Carsele, who also received the $500 award, and Zoe Maria Kalantzis in 2018.
Ammeen is joined by fellow ’57 graduates and some area professionals in reviewing information and essays from the applicants, whose names are not known, to determine the recipient(s).
The scholarship fund is supported by donations, including those from 1957 graduates who have pledged $57 per year to keep the fund growing. Individuals and groups may make contributions, as memorials or in recognition of honors or events, by mailing checks, with a notation of EC ’57 scholarship, to the Beaver County Foundation, PO Box 569, Beaver, PA 15009. All donations are tax deductible.
