Historical Society Fall Meeting A Success – Rain And All

Everyone was welcomed to the first Fall meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society.  Approximately 70 people attended the dinner which, because of the weather, was moved from Ewing Park to Calvin Presbyterian Church.  Following the invocation by Charles Brown everyone enjoyed a “picnic” dinner prepared by Nico’s Restaurant.

Following dinner, a short business meeting was held.  Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as written. Treasurer’s report was given by Charlie Brown.  Motion to accept was made by Mary May and seconded by Andy Kindle.

It was announced a new slate of officers must be presented to the members at the October meeting.  Mary May and Bob Morabito from the Board will select 3 people from the membership to assist them in choosing the candidates to be presented at that meeting.   Voting will take place at the November meeting.  Andy Kindle encouraged everyone to take home a pamphlet which included a membership form to hand out to friends and family.  Anyone joining in Oct., Nov., or Dec. will automatically be members throughout 2019.  Single membership is $10.00  He also explained the Society’s involvement in the Ellwood City Fall Fest Sept. 29 and encouraged anyone who could to volunteer to help.

Mother Christophora of the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration was then introduced as the guest speaker.  She and Mother Magdolina spoke of the purpose of the Monastery which is prayer and hospitality.  She advised that everyone is welcome to visit the Monastery to join them in church, spend quiet time on the grounds, take a walk on their trails or join them in a meal.  There are also cabins on the grounds that can be reserved for a donation.  Their grounds cover 100 acres, 80 of which are wooded.  Anyone can view their services online at www.orthodoxmonasteryellwoodcity.org.  Mother Christophora was presented a copy of the 1896 Historic Graphic Arts map of Ellwood City.

Following her presentation, a number of door prizes were awarded and the meeting was adjourned.

OCTOBER 8  PROGRAM TO FEATURE FORMER RESIDENT

There will be a short business meeting at the History Center on October 8, 2018.  Following this meeting, Dr. Robert “Kip” Jones will be the guest speaker.

Dr. Robert “Kip” Jones was born and raised here in Ellwood City, before moving to the Pittsburgh area.   Kip is the son of Robert T. and Marie Manning Jones.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1963, where he participated in several academic and sport activities.   Kip was affiliated with the family businesses, the Ellwood Stone Co., and the Stonecrest Golf Course in his younger years.  Dr. Jones is a radiologist in the Pittsburgh area.  He received  his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Radiology uses imagination to gather information about the structure and function of the human body.

Kip has used his own imagination, studies and the love of history, to present an enjoyable, educational program for us.  He has been our guest speaker for many years.  Each program has been different and so very interesting.

This year’s topic will be no different.  Kip will assuredly keep you on the edge of your seat.   His programs are laced with humor, and filled with facts as he holds your interest.

The meeting begins at 7:00 pm at the History Center.  Refreshments will be provided.
