PHOTOS: Ellwood Falls To Freedom In Rain-Soaked Homecoming Game

After rain and thunder caused multiple game delays, Ellwood City finally fell to Freedom 35-13 in their homecoming contest Friday night at a wet Helling Stadium.

Freedom senior Zack Rosa led an offensive attack that scored in each quarter of the Class-AA contest and connected with five difference receivers en route to his five touchdown performance.

After the Bulldog’s first two scores of the contest, the Wolverines were finally able to counter and get on the board with a 15-play, 82-yard scoring drive in the second quarter capped with a 1-yard plunge by senior tailback Rick Pitrelli on 4th and goal. A quick strike from quarterback Ryan Gibbons to Pitrelli for 65-yards was a crucial play in the scoring drive.

After a Wolverine turnover late in the first half, Freedom quickly capitalized again to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Rosa connected on the final two of his passing touchdowns to stretch out the Freedom lead to 35-7 in the fourth quarter before Ellwood was able to get back on the scoreboard.

Donavin Chambers found the endzone for Ellwood City on a 6-yard touchdown run midway through the 4th quarter to round out the scoring in the contest.  Chambers finished with 55 yards on the ground in defeat. Chambers also returned a kickoff for 64 yards for the Wolverines.

Defensively, Wolverine linebacker Coulton Cunningham had a strong contest, finishing with 12 tackles and 1 sack.  Ryan Roberts also recorded a sack defensively for Ellwood City.

Rosa finished the contest 13-18 passing with 215 yards and 5 touchdowns for Freedom (4-1 overall).

Next week, Ellwood City will travel to Western Beaver (2-2, 2-1).
