The Ellwood City baseball squad watched their Monday afternoon game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 13-2 loss to Shenango.
The Wolverines struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Shenango, giving up 13 runs. Shenango fired up the offense in the first inning, when Jake Merkel’s sac fly scored an early run for Shenango. Shenango scored eight runs in the seventh inning to stretch their lead. Shenango’s big inning was driven by a triple by Anyhony Ryan, a single by Fuller, a fielder’s choice by Mark Mangino, an error on a ball put in play by Fry, and a double by Shane Cato.
Merkel led the Shenango to victory on the pitcher’s mound. He went four and a third innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven. Peters, Cato, and Fuller all put in work on the pitcher’s mound in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
Sean Busby took the loss for Ellwood City. He allowed four hits and five runs over four innings, striking out four. Anthony Roth led the Wolverines offense with two hits in two at bats.
Shenango totaled ten hits. Benny Dottle and Fry each had multiple hits for Shenango. Dottle went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Shenango in hits.
Mohawk Runs Away With Early Lead in Victory Over Lady Wolverines
The Lady Wolverines also fell behind early and couldn’t come back in an 11-7 loss to Mohawk on Monday.
Despite the loss, Wolverines did collect eight hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Mohawk had 11 hits on the way to victory. Mohawk got on the board in the first inning when an error scored two runs for Mohawk.
Wolverines notched six runs in the fifth inning. Wolverines’s big inning was driven by singles by Anna Ferrucci and Maura Agostinelli, a walk by Maria Ioanilli, and a double by Reagan Mittler.
Mohawk scored three runs in the sixth inning. Mohawk offense in the inning was led by Kaylee Boring and Trinity Voss, who each had RBIs in the inning. Voss was on the mound for Mohawk . She went seven innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out 13.
Madi Krugh toed the rubber for Wolverines. She went seven innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits and striking out one.
Mohawk launched two home runs on the day. Alyssa Young had a dinger in the fourth inning. Madison Shiderly had a four bagger in the fifth inning.
Wolverines tallied eight hits on the day. Ferrucci and Breonna Streit each racked up multiple hits for Wolverines. Ferrucci went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Wolverines in hits.
