According to a press release made available Tuesday afternoon, and effective immediately, Valley Waste will no longer accept recycling in plastic bags. Recycling must be placed loose in carts or bins. Please do not put plastic bags in your home recycling bin.
The Valley Waste Recycling Center is meant to sort cans, bottles, paper and cardboard. It is not meant to sort plastic bags. Plastic bags are among the greatest headaches for recyclers. They slow down systems, drive up costs and hurt the quality of materials.
It is not that used plastic bags cannot be recycled into new materials, they simply require a different collection system and processing equipment than most curbside recycling programs provide.
Plastic bags can be recycled, just not in home recycling bins. Instead, just drop them off at specifically marked bins in front of most supermarkets.
Recycling will be picked up every other week at curbside on the same day as trash collection. The Borough of Ellwood City provides residents with a recycling container.

Perhaps Valley Waste Service should take notice that not one of Ellwood City’s supermarkets have specifically marked bins for plastic bag recycling.
I look forward for Valley Waste Service to immediately provide the supermarkets with the bins or withdraw their ill advised policy.

Apparently putting a bunch of plastic bags into one plastic bag and placing it in our recycle bin is a big problem for Valley Waste Service. They prefer to pick them up at a supermarket.
The issue, according to Valley Waste Service, is resolved if we put a bunch of plastic bags into one plastic bag and take it to a supermarket where there are no bins.
Valley Waste Service fails to realize that many residents and small businesses have paper shredders. It appears Valley Waste Service wants us to dump shredded paper directly into the bins and not put the shredded paper in plastic bags. I can comply.
Valley Waste Service needs to re-think their poor decision and not shoot from the hip.
Rumor has it that Valley Waste Service will have special bins at McDonalds exclusively for recycling plastic straws.
